Growth Mindset Project

Psychologist, Carol Dweck, came up with a theory known as Growth Mindset, which is a person’s point of view of looking at ability as something that can be developed through dedication and hard work. On the other hand, a fixed mindset is the belief that intelligence and ability can not be developed. There are many details that contribute to supporting these theories. According to an article in Stanford Magazine, Carol Dweck found that “ ability means different thing to the two groups of mindset meaning that one group wants to show off ability, whereas the other group wants to increase ability”(13).  Looking at how these two groups think of what ability is,  it will play a huge role in whether or not they succeed in life. Therefore, details of the growth mindset have contributed to many people’s lives because it helps people to find the meaning of life and not to waste it.

Our artifact is a maze that represents Growth Mindset Vs. Fixed. We have one cartoon representing growth mindset, while the other represents fixed. Both cartoons start off by going through a maze that is built in the same way as the other. After finishing the first maze, the cartoons decide whether they want to move on to a harder maze or an easier maze. The fixed mindset cartoon thinks about his peers telling him that he is smart. In order to keep it that way, he decides to go through the easier maze while the growth mindset cartoon decides to go through the harder one because he loves a challenge. The icon details, the imperative contribution, and growth mindset all play a role in the structure of our artifact. Our artifact is split into pieces with each piece representing the details that contribute to a growth and fixed mindset. The artifact we created is significant because it symbolizes a growth and fixed mindset in a distinctive way.

Growth Mindset Reflection:
On this growth mindset project, I learned about what the difference is between a growth and a fixed mindset. I personally feel like I have a little bit of both mindsets. While presenting, I felt like I should have talked a bit louder and with more of a confident voice. I liked this project a lot because it opened my mind up so that in the future, I won’t say things such as “you’re so smart” to little kids but instead praise the effort that they put in. I also learned that getting a bad grade isn’t really a bad thing, it will just motivate me to work harder next time. Overall, I thought this was a very fun project to do.
"The Crucible" End of the Play F.I.N.D Reflection
"The Crucible" was a historical fiction written by Arthur Miller. One fact about "The Crucible" is that John Proctor decided to die to keep his pride and self-dignity. While reading this play, I felt angry at Judge Danforth because I believed that his trials were very unfair. There was no actual evidence that the accused were actual witches except for the fact that their names were uttered by others. There was great pressure on Judge Danforth since his reputation is on the line, therefore, he acted like the hero and persecuted anyone who seemed like a witch or did not confess to be one. A new idea that I learned while reading was about mass hysteria. I discovered that mass hysteria can happen anywhere and at any time. For example, when Judge Danforth was asking Mary Warren to faint and she couldn't, that was because she lacked the hysteria. The other time she could because Abigail was there and since she was the "popular girl," all the other girls would follow her lead. A personal decision that I will make based on my reading and understanding of "The Crucible" is that I will be truthful and honest to myself. I don't want to be like Mary Warren whom cowardly confess to save her life. I want to be a person like John Proctor where people will look at him years later and admire the fact that he was truthful and honest with himself since he didn't falsely confess.

October Reflection:
In terms of reaching my academic goals this year, I feel like I am doing well since I have learned a lot in these pass few months. For instance, I learned how to write an informative essay and I have participated way more than I have last year. I have currently read three books this year and I want to work on reading more. Some strengths that I see in myself are that I am a good listener and I get things done when I need to. However, I feel like I need to participate more. Some weaknesses that I have is that I'm not very good at writing essays and I need to use more academic language. As a writer, I feel like I'm getting better every week. I learned how to analyze and add commentary to my essay. As I have said many times, I honestly think that writing "The Crucible" essay is one of the hardest things I have done this year. Sometimes I got a headache from staring at my screen too much from wondering what to write next. This month, November, I would like to work on how to become a better writer so that when an essay comes along, I will have little to no trouble writing one. I would also like to read more this month so that I can achieve my S.M.A.R.T goals which was to read twelve books this semester.
Quick Write: Freedom + Conflict
Having both freedom and conflict comes with a prize. Some positive impacts and contributions of freedom is that we have the right to speak, act, and believe whatever we want but that is to an extent. Freedom comes with some restrictions. There must be some type of order so that we could have freedom without it being absolute chaos. For example, a person can't go into a store stealing things thinking that is freedom. Freedom is you are able to go into a store to buy anything you want to. Although there are many positive things towards having freedom, people can abuse their freedom and cross the line. Freedom starts becoming a bad thing when conflict arises because of it. Freedom is never a bad thing but when people start using it in a unacceptable way, that's when it becomes a problem. That is the same thing with having conflict. Having conflict is a good thing because it is necessarily to make us stronger as a community and we can even grow from it. There are also negatives about having conflict. Stating the obvious, conflict can lead to arguments, fights, and even death. Conflict and freedom are not true opposites because they have paradoxical relationship. For example, when the thirteen colonies wanted to break away from Great Britain, they had to go into a war, which is conflict, in order to get a resolution which is their freedom. First, there must be some type of conflict to happen in order for the thirteen colonies to have their freedom. The thirteen colonies was on one end of the arrow while Great Britain was on the other leaving freedom and conflict in the middle. In today's society, there is a fight for education in other countries. These kids and teenagers have to fight for an education which can lead to a conflict. For example, Malala Yousafzai was shot because she was standing up for her freedom in education. She survived an assassination attempt and now is an activist for female education. Although there is not truly freedom in education, there was a conflict, her being shot, which lead to her motivating other girls to stand up for their education and right. Fighting for freedom is not easy therefor it leads to conflict but after freedom is granted, anyone can do what they want without hesitating. By all means though, there is boundaries that people can not cross.
What does it mean to be American? What is the American Dream?
The general meaning of being an American is to be a “native or citizen of America,” but there are also more meanings behind it. To be American means to be in a country where dreams can be fulfilled. Being an American means acting in the manner that is contributing to the country's’ success. For instance, helping the country grow, make changes that are necessary, and being free. Americans have the freedoms such as speech/expression, press, assemble, petition, and religion. The American dream is the idea that the citizens, it does not matter what race or social class they are in, are able to have countless opportunities to grow and be successful. As stated in the Declaration of Independence, “all men are created equal.” Whatever a person sets their mind to, they are able to make it happen. Hardwork and dedication will be needed in order for them to succeed which will benefit their future generations to have a better life. Their kids can have a better chance. People can come here so that they can be safe. America is a place where barriers can be conquered and knocked down. People will come her to have more money and job. You can go from rags to riches. America is also a place where its citizens will have their basic rights. The people will not had the added stress of whether or not they can do something. Anything can be accomplished as long as it does not break the law and endanger other people. People should not be afraid to start a business. The American dream should provide its people with equality, justice, independence, and success.
